Challenge of Connecticut... has been operating as a residential outreach center for troubled people since 1970. Concentrating on young men and women, emphasizing personal and social development through a sharing and caring environment. Here, the process of healing begins with a unique combination of acceptance, discipline and structure. Through a planned program geared toward the physical, mental and spiritual needs of men and women facing emotional turmoil and pain. Youth Challenge offers an atmosphere for growth through biblical counseling and work study. Services are centered around a community residence offering:
Although 20% of the referrals have been made by community hospitals, courts, clergy and correctional facilities, most of the residents are voluntary, walk-in clientele. The open door policy welcomes men and women from every walk of life without regard to religious, ethnic or racial background. The only requirements necessary for eligibility are:
Many today are in need of help and cannot afford to pay for it; others simply don't know where to find help. With the outreach facilities of Youth Challenge, many are finding a future and a hope. The continuation of this program is dependent on the contributions of community organizations and citizens like yourself who meet the challenge - the Youth Challenge - for happy and productive lives. The Men’s Residential Center is centered at the community residence, 15-17 May Street, Hartford, Connecticut, which serves as the initial phase for male residents. Here, the incentive to forsake the drug habit for the pursuit of a new life is instilled. This induction phase includes counseling, classes and group activities. Long-range training for men is also provided at The Youth Challenge Training Center, a 21-acre farm located in Moosup, Connecticut. The training initiated at the induction center continues at the Training Center as individuals are challenged to progressively address personal, social, academic, and vocational areas in their lives. The training made available in this program foster a strong work ethic to be instilled and developed. The Youth Challenge Mission for Women, which opened in 1981 and a duplicate of the services of the male program, however, directed toward women’s needs, is licensed to accommodate residents. It is located at 32 Atwood Street, Hartford, Connecticut.
