Jamie and Gary
My
name is Jamie. I am a 36-year old African American female, mother of three
children, from Rocky Mountain, NC. I had been using crack/cocaine for
17 years and I had been trying to get free of it for almost 12 years.
In 1988 I met my husband, Gary. He drank, and I used drugs. I would go
into short-term residential or outpatient treatment programs, mental health
wards and detox centers. My life revolved around drugs. After a while,
our relationship became verbally abusive and violent. We took our children
through many separations, and incarcerations. We lost our jobs, we lost
our house, and our children had to live with my parents because we couldn’t
provide anything for them. We’d get straight long enough to get
jobs, proper housing, the children, etcetera, only to lose it again to
drugs.
At the end of April 2002, we began seriously talking about our situation.
We needed help desperately. Gary called his mother one night. He told
her he didn’t want any more money, but love and help. She told him
to come to Connecticut, to a Christ-centered, 18-month rehabilitation
program. I said to God, if you bring back my children, my husband, and
my family, I’ll do what you ask me. Just give me back my life. I
had something I didn’t know I had, faith. Faith, I had obtained
through God’s mercy, nothing of myself.
The last awful, lonely night in a cheap hotel room before I came to Connecticut,
took me to a place where a decision had to be made. I wanted an
entirely new life, and I knew the only way I could get it was by God through
His Son, Jesus Christ. My mother once told me, the only way I
would stop doing what I was doing was if I turned to God. Little did I
know how right she was! I am being trained at the Youth Challenge Mission
for Women to serve Him for whatever purpose, to be the wife, the mother
and the woman of God He intended. “For in the gospel a righteousness
from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,
just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.” (Rom.
1:17 NIV)
