The Story of Reverend Hernán Alamo and Youth Challenge
My name is Hernán Alamo. I came through the doors of Youth Challenge of CT nineteen years ago (1993). I was born in Puerto Rico to a loving family; the youngest of six siblings and parents who were married for 50 + years. My father was an alcoholic. As a young school student, I faced all kinds of peer pressure and found my escape in drinking alcohol and experimenting with marijuana. After graduating from High School I worked in a small Auto Body garage which I later purchased from the previous owner and successfully managed it for several years. I married soon, thereafter and quickly found out I was going to be a father to a little girl. I continued to make many poor business decisions driven by my drug addiction and found myself in a web of drug dealings gone wrong. At the age of thirty-seven I was running for my life as gang members searched to kill me. My brothers and sisters sought refuge for me by sending me to a rehabilitation center known as Youth Challenge of CT. With an alias name I boarded a plane straight to Hartford CT.
While at Youth Challenge of CT, I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ and promised Him that I would follow in His ways. He has opened my eyes to His grace and unfailing love and my heart to express my gratitude in helping the hurting.
I have been drug free now for nineteen years. Although my marriage dissolved many years ago, I have a beautiful relationship with my daughter who is an accomplished Ballerina in the San Juan Ballet Company. She is also a student at the University of Puerto Rico and will soon graduate with a degree in Journalism. I have since remarried to a wonderful and supportive wife, Janette, who is the most understanding and giving person I know.
I am recognized as a Deacon at the church of Glory Chapel International Cathedral and a licensed Reverend of Youth Challenge International. I currently serve as a Drug & Rehabilitation counselor at Youth Challenge of CT in Hartford, CT.
Because of the grace of God and His mercy, I live my life in gratitude and with purpose to help those that are hurting and in need of the knowledge of God’s goodness. Praise be to God!
